Tish Rabe graduated from Ithaca College School of Music cum laude with a degree in Vocal Performance, singing both opera and jazz. With the help of Dave Connor, her Needham Massachusetts high school Music Director, she was lucky enough to get a job in the Music Department in the early seasons of Sesame Street. While there she worked directly with Jim Henson and was selected to sing background vocals for the Muppets including a classic song with Oscar. (She is convinced she is the blonde Muppet behind Oscar!)
She was named Associate Producer for Big Bird in China, a 90 minute family special shot on location in China, which won the Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program for NBC. She sings “The Monkey King” song in the show.
Upon returning from China she was tapped to be one of the Senior Producers for 3-2-1- Contact, a ground-breaking science series for kids funded by the National Science Foundation. During her five seasons on the series she wrote scripts and lyrics for many of the popular songs. Pat Benatar provided the vocal for They’re Endangered about endangered animals. Other favorites included People are Mammals Too and What Does Your Garbage Say About You? Ms. Rabe also sang on many of the segments and was nominated for an Emmy for Best Musical Direction for the series.
She became Senior Producer for Children’s Media at Random House and created home videos for The Berenstain Bears, Dr. Seuss and Richard Scarry among many others. She also produced The City Mouse and the Country Mouse a Christmas special for HBO in which Crystal Gayle sang two of Ms.Rabe’s original songs. Building on the popularity of the special, Ms. Rabe became the Head Writer for The Country Mouse and the City Mouse Adventures, leading an international team of writers for 52 episodes. She also wrote scripts for Clifford and Clifford’s Puppy Days, was Creative Consultant for Gerald McBoing Boing for the Cartoon Network and worked closely with Rosemary Wells to develop her popular Max and Ruby books into a broadcast series on Nickelodeon. For Scholastic Entertainment she adapted the popular I SPY books into an animated series for HBO Family.
Ms. Rabe was Editorial Director and Music Producer for Soundprints, creating book and audio CD’s and writing original songs for Disney, Sesame Street, the Smithsonian Institution and the African Wildlife Federation. She also performed as a singer/narrator for recordings for both Disney Princess and Bambi.
She enjoys speaking to parent groups about the importance of childhood literacy and continues to write books. Her board book Love You, Hug You, Read to You! helps caregivers read to their children and she created a Spanish/English version Te Amo,te abrazo, leo contigo!
Named The Singing Author by her teacher fans, she reaches students across the country with her Virtual Author Visits via ZOOM technology. She also travels to nearby elementary schools for “live” author visits and shares her love of reading, writing (and singing!) with the students she meets.
She performs near her homes in Mystic, Connecticut and New York City with her jazz/country band Tish Rabe and Friends (listen to album!). A proud mom, step-mom and grandmother, she enjoys spending time with her growing family.
